Books have the power to foster empathy and understanding—of people, cultures, hopes, dreams, joys, and sorrows. Empathy is the foundation for understanding those who are different from ourselves, and books open doors for children into new places, perspectives, and experiences.

Over the past year, I have been deeply exploring my passion for writing about the places, people, and practices that have shaped my healing journey. What began as curiosity became a rich and nourishing path—one that brought me back to a place of inner peace. That peace now flows into my writing, much like the nutrient‑rich waters of the Monterey Bay that so often inspire my reflections.
Through this journey, I learned to go inward:
• Through breathwork, tapping into spirit and presence
• Through journaling the good, the bad, the joyful, the painful, the confusing, and the enlightening—allowing my heart to heal
• Through studying creativity in Stanford Continuing Education, expanding my understanding of the creative world
• Through surfing regularly, filling my soul by entering a flow state that connects body, ocean, and spirit

All of this energy work led me to a new life direction. . .
• What emerged is a creative orchestra—a passionate symphony of lived lessons, translated into children’s stories that foster connection between reader and listener. Stories that invite children and adults alike to be present, to bond, and to learn about themselves, each other, and the world around them.

I am Deb Ryan, an author and entrepreneur behind The Chicks Company and Chickie Daisy Books. I am passionate about empowering young readers through stories that celebrate curiosity, confidence, and the joy of living an active, engaged life.
My books encourage children—and readers of all ages—to explore boldly, try new things, and recognize the strength they already carry within themselves.
This work is a new sprout of growth for my shining spirit and soul—
and it is through writing children’s books that I now share that light with the world.
